Craving fresh figs but worried about the cold? Worry no more! 🎉 The Chicago Hardy Fig tree is your answer. Known for its exceptional cold hardiness, this fig variety produces small, brown to purple figs with a beautiful, strawberry-jam-colored interior. 😋

Also called the Bensonhurst Purple or Hardy Chicago, this productive and easy-to-grow tree is drought-tolerant once established. Even in colder climates, it bounces back! It may die back in winter, but new growth appears in spring, bringing with it delicious figs. Figs also grow on older wood, ripening in early summer. This self-pollinating and heat-tolerant tree is a true champion! 💪

Imagine this delightful tree gracing your patio! Its cheerful foliage and broad leaves add beauty, while the figs start green and ripen to a darker hue. Perfect for container gardening, simply bring potted trees indoors during winter. ❄️

Figs are a nutritional powerhouse, packed with fibre, calcium, iron, potassium, magnesium, and vitamins A and C. Enjoy them fresh in salads, charcuterie boards, or with cheese. Chefs love them for desserts, and they can also be dehydrated, canned, or frozen. 👩‍🍳

But wait, there's more! Even the leaves are edible! Use them for grilling, steaming, or baking to add a smoky flavour to your dishes. 🌿 Dehydrated leaves make a delicious tea. ☕

Grown in the ground, the Chicago Hardy Fig can reach 10-15 feet. In pots, its size is limited by the container. It thrives in warm climates with well-drained soil and plenty of sun. ☀️

Overwintering Tips:

  • Potted Figs: Move to an insulated, unheated, dark room or cool basement. Water monthly (just moist).

  • In-Ground Figs: Insulate with chicken wire, burlap, or straw bales stuffed with leaves. Bend branches to protect as much as possible. New growth will emerge from the roots even if the top dies back.
